Why I'm Running

With nearly 20 years of public service, during the worst economic collapse in our lifetimes, I’ve seen first-hand the difference good government can make -- and I’ve made it happen time and time again. Our Congressional district, Michigan's 13th, is home to three stadiums, two casinos, two major hospital systems, a major university, a robust community college system, our international airport, and many world-class cultural institutions.  Yet, it is the second poorest in the nation! The truth is, too many folks have been left behind and left out of the economic recovery seen in our region. To me, this is unacceptable.  I am a native son -- born, raised and stayed! My wife Sherri and I want better for my kids, and every child. It’s time we connect the dots between the everyday, hard-working people in the 13th District and the potential around us.  We have to do more to invest in transit, so people can get to good-paying jobs and school. It's time to increase the minimum wage, provide access to meaningful job training, and affordable community and four-year college so we can provide for our families and our kids can get ahead.  We have to bring resources back to our neighborhoods from Washington, not just to fight blight, but to also rebuild our communities.  I’ve done it as Mayor.  As your Congressman, I can help others do it, too. My pledge to you is to serve with integrity; to be accessible, hands-on and hard-working -- as I’ve always been; and for my office to be your first and last stop when you need help with any federal program, services or benefits. Going to Washington needs to be about much more than casting a vote to impeach President Trump. It needs to be about seeing a vision for more vibrant neighborhoods, for creating a culture of opportunity for everyday families, and for making Washington finally work for us. I hope you agree with me. I ask you to join me and  “Vote on the Wild Side” in the August 7th Democratic Primary!

Experience. Passion. Results.
